When running a business in Canada, certain activities will require you to have a Business Number (BN) or a specific CRA program account. The easiest and fastest way to register for these is through Business Registration Online (BRO). Here’s what you need to know:
Business Number (BN)
A BN is a unique 9-digit number that serves as the standard identifier for your business or legal entity. Your business will only have one BN, regardless of how many CRA accounts you open. You’ll need a BN if:
- You incorporate your business
- You need a CRA program account (such as GST/HST, payroll, or corporate income tax)
During the registration process, ensure your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is properly associated with your BN for authentication purposes.
CRA Program Account Identifiers
CRA program accounts are specific to certain business activities and are identified by a two-letter, four-digit code attached to your BN. Here are some of the most common accounts:
- GST/HST Account: Required if your business collects GST/HST. Identifiers start with RT.
- Payroll Deductions: Needed if your business pays employees. Identifiers start with RP.
- Corporation Income Tax: For incorporated businesses. Identifiers start with RC.
- Underused Housing Tax: If your corporation owns property in Canada and needs to file this tax return. Identifiers start with RU.
